Al Seckel is a frequent lecturer on topics such as cognitive perception covering many senses (mainly visual). He is known in America for his drive (which was at its peak in 1980s) in the "freethought movement". Seckel researches, and tests illusions to try and find out what conditions are needed for them to show their effects.
In 1994, he founded the first free website based on optical illusions, which currently resides at the number one spot in Google for a number of top keywords. Until 2005, Seckel was strongly involved in the workings of the California Institute of Technology, and mingled with the likes of Shinsuke Shimojo and brain scientist Christof Koch. Nowadays, he regularly invents displays for several science museums, and aims to share the world of optical illusions with the younger generations. Because of this life goal, Seckel writes for the American "National Geographic Kids magazine" every month, in his own private column. This desire to inspire illusions into kids seems to have been a success with his book "The Art of Optical Illusions" ranked top on the American Library Association's "Top 10 Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers" in 2001.
Seckels memorable quotes are based on very "I-want-to-inspire-education-into-kids" like and religious (see example) themes. Including "The true secret to genius is in creativity, not in technical mechanics."
