Optical Illusions

A sample optical illusion found in the 'Optical Illusions' category. Concentrate on the whitespace and see the circles slowly rotate. This image is not animated digitally, but by how your retina processes the peripheral data. You will therefore notice that if you focus on a circle itself, it will appear not to move!

Optical Illusions

Our brain can sometimes interpret confusing information and images (usually made up of colour, lines and irregular shapes) incorrectly, and produce unusual results. Some artists take advantage of this supposed 'disadvantage' and create some stunning and varied pieces.
Enjoy!

The Hermann Grid Illusion

A staple in optical illusions, blobs of grey appear to form at the end of lines, even when they don't actually exist!

The Enigma Illusion

One example of a scintillation effect. The image appears to show fuzziness and distortion even though it consists of only plain blocks of colour.

The Lincoln Illusion

See a hidden, incredibly detailed portrait of Abraham Lincoln in a seemingly normal painting by Salvador Dali.

The Rotating Snake Optical Illusion

Inanimate circles move because of the brain failing to process certain key details in the image, creating the illusion. Image credited to Akiyoshi Kitaoka.

The Eclipse After-Image Illusion

Stare at a coloured stimulus and see what can be only likened to that of an 'eclipse'.
